About Iresine heterophylla Standl.
Iresine heterophylla, commonly called Standley's bloodleaf, is a plant species native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. Documented collection locations for the species include Arizona, New Mexico, Texas in the United States, and Chihuahua, Sonora, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Campeche, and Tabasco in Mexico. This species is a perennial herb that can reach up to 100 cm in height. It bears opposite, ovate leaves that grow up to 6 cm long. Its small flowers are arranged in a relatively large, branching panicle that can reach up to 40 cm in length. Individual flowers range from white to straw-colored, measure up to 4 mm across, and are covered in dense woolly hairs. Its fruits are green and egg-shaped, usually measuring less than 1 mm across. Each fruit is enclosed by persistent flower parts, which are themselves covered in woolly hairs, making the entire mature fruit cluster appear white and woolly.
