About Ipomopsis rubra (L.) Wherry

Identification: Ipomopsis rubra has very short, filamentous leaves that grow on long stems, which can reach over five feet in length in some specimens. Its flowers are around one inch long, with several small stamens inside. These tubular flowers grow in spike-like clusters and all point upward. The inner surface of the flowers bears small yellow dots, and the petals are five-lobed. Ipomopsis rubra also develops a very long taproot that allows it to survive drought conditions. Uses: This species is grown in gardens as a hummingbird-attracting plant, valued for its hardiness, self-seeding habit, and low water requirements.
