About Imperatoria ostruthium L.
Imperatoria ostruthium L., commonly known as masterwort, is also classified under the synonym Peucedanum ostruthium. It is a species of flowering plant belonging to the family Apiaceae.
This plant is native to mountain regions of Central and Southern Europe. Its confirmed native locations include the Carpathians, Alps, northern Apennines, and Massif Central, with isolated populations also found in the Iberian Peninsula. Because masterwort has been widely cultivated and introduced outside of its original native range, the exact full boundaries of its native range are not entirely clear.
Masterwort is used as a flavoring agent for a variety of liqueurs and bitters. In traditional Austrian medicine, its roots and leaves are used for multiple purposes: internal use as tea, liqueurs, or wine, and external use as fumigation, tincture, or incense. It is employed to treat disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, respiratory tract, and cardiovascular system, as well as to address infections, fever, flu, and colds.
