About Imperata brevifolia Vasey

Imperata brevifolia is a perennial grass that grows from a hard rhizome, reaching heights close to 1.5 meters. Its flat leaves can grow up to 50 centimeters long and 1.5 centimeters wide. The inflorescence is a narrow, cylindrical white plume that measures 10 to 30 centimeters in length. This plume is densely filled with silky white hairs, and dotted with dark speckles, which are the orange-brown anthers and purplish-brown stigmas of its spikelets. This species is native to the Southwestern United States, ranging from California to Texas. It is also native to northern Mexico, where it grows in arid regions where water is available.
