About Ilex hayataiana Loes.

Ilex hayataiana Loes. (also referred to as Ilex hayatana) is a species of flowering plant in the holly family, Aquifoliaceae, that is generally recorded as native to Taiwan. There is ongoing confusion about the correct identity and characteristics of this species. For example, the Flora of China describes it as an evergreen tree with "pale gray-black" bark that grows up to 12 m (39 ft) tall. It states the species grows in forests at elevations between 200 to 300 m (700 to 1,000 ft) above sea level, and is also native to Japan. In contrast, the International Dendrology Society notes that the original specimen of Ilex hayataiana Loes. is still alive, grows at 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level, and has been recorded as either an 18 m (59 ft) tree or a 4 m (13 ft) shrub.
