About Ilex anomala Hook. & Arn.

Ilex anomala Hook. & Arn. is a species of holly, commonly known as Hawaiʻi holly, kāwaʻu, or ʻaiea in Hawaii. This species is native to the Hawaiian Islands, and the Marquesas Islands and Society Islands of French Polynesia. In Hawaii, it grows in mixed mesic and wet forests at elevations ranging from 600 to 1,400 meters (2,000 to 4,600 feet) on all main Hawaiian islands. In the Marquesas Islands, Ilex anomala is a characteristic canopy tree in low-canopied cloud forests found above 1000 meters elevation. It occurs there alongside the tree species Cheirodendron bastardianum, Metrosideros collina, and climbing plants of the genus Freycinetia.
