About Idotea urotoma Stimpson, 1864

Idotea urotoma, commonly called the blunt-tailed isopod, is variable in overall appearance. It typically matches the color of the seaweed or seagrass it lives on, with coloration ranging from yellowish gold to reddish brown or black. The margin of the telson, or the rear end of the organism's body, is broadly triangular. The right and left margins of this structure converge without a distinct median projection, and this feature distinguishes the blunt-tailed isopod from other similar isopod species. Along with I. rufescens and I. ochotensis, the blunt-tailed isopod is one of only three Idotea species that has a maxilliped palp with four articles instead of five.
