About Ictinogomphus australis (Selys, 1873)
Ictinogomphus australis, commonly called the Australian tiger, is a dragonfly species that belongs to the family Gomphidae. This species occurs near rivers, lagoons, lakes, and ponds. They are large dragonflies, with an average wingspan of 100 millimeters and body length of 70 millimeters. Their eyes are widely spaced across the top of the head, they have clear wings, and their bodies are colored yellow and black. Males can be distinguished from females by the presence of two curved flaps below the eighth segment of the abdomen. Their distribution forms an arc across Australia, stretching from near Broome in Western Australia along the northern edge of the continent to Point Hicks at the continent’s south-eastern corner. This taxon has been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and categorized as a species of least concern.
