About Icterus nigrogularis (Hahn, 1819)

This species, the yellow oriole, has a scientific name of Icterus nigrogularis (Hahn, 1819). Adults measure 20–21 cm (7.9–8.3 in) in length and weigh an average of 38 g (1.3 oz). Most of its plumage is yellow, which matches its common name. Adult males have a black eye mask, a thin black line on the throat, a black tail, and black wings that feature a white wing bar and white edging on some feathers. Females have similar patterning to males, but their plumage is slightly duller. Juvenile yellow orioles have an olive-tinged yellow back and have no black markings on the face. The yellow oriole is also called the plantain bird and small corn bird; in Venezuela, it is known as gonzalito. It breeds in northern South America, specifically in Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, and parts of northern Brazil (northern Roraima state and eastern Amapá). It lives in open woodland, scrub, and gardens.
