Each valve of its shell carries a double series of long, curved spines along the posterior slope. Pitar dione, a species closely related to Hysteroconcha lupanaria, is found in the Western Atlantic. Hysteroconcha lupanaria itself is distributed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
