Hyptis alata can grow up to 4 feet tall, and produces round flower heads. This species has simple, lanceolate leaves with serrated margins. Individuals of Hyptis alata release a musky mint scent, which is the origin of its common name. The native range of Hyptis alata covers the southeastern United States, stretching from Texas to North Carolina; it is also native to Cuba, Argentina, southern Brazil, and Paraguay. Hyptis alata grows in wetlands, prairies, pond margins, and wet flatwoods.
