About Hyptiotes paradoxus (C.L.Koch, 1834)
Hyptiotes paradoxus, commonly called the triangle spider, is a species of cribellate orbweaver spider belonging to the family Uloboridae. This species is distributed across Europe, Turkey, and the Caucasus. Within Europe, it has been recorded in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia (on both Saaremaa island and the Estonian mainland), and Finland’s Åland region; it also occurs very sparsely in southern England. Triangle spiders live primarily in shrubs and evergreen trees, though they have also been found living in deciduous trees. Male Hyptiotes paradoxus reach sexual maturity in early autumn. Because these spiders have small eyes, males rely on the pheromone-coated cribellate silk dragline produced by females to locate mates. Courtship for this species primarily centers on vibrations transmitted through the female’s web.
