About Hypsipetes ganeesa Sykes, 1832
Square-tailed bulbul, with the scientific name Hypsipetes ganeesa Sykes, 1832, can be distinguished from the black bulbul by its lack of the black streak that black bulbuls have behind the eye and on the ear-coverts. In southern India, the nesting activity of this species begins in February and reaches its peak in May. Eggs take 12 to 13 days of incubation to hatch, and chicks fledge about 11 or 12 days after hatching. Populations of square-tailed bulbul move in response to the monsoon. Known nest predators of this species include birds of prey and snakes, specifically the black-winged kite and oriental ratsnake. The crested goshawk has been recorded preying on adult square-tailed bulbuls.
