About Hypselodoris purpureomaculosa Hamatani, 1995
Hypselodoris purpureomaculosa is a nudibranch species described by Hamatani in 1995. This species has a white body with a mantle that has a distinct orange border. Its gills and rhinophores are also orange. The species name purpureomaculosa references the purple spots that cover its upper mantle; in some individuals, these spots range in color from red to black. Mature individuals of this species grow to a length of at least 40 millimeters. Hypselodoris purpureomaculosa is distributed in Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines. For its ecology, this nudibranch feeds on sponges, and it primarily consumes purple sponges from the genus Euryspongia.
