About Hypoxylon fragiforme (Pers.) J.Kickx f.

Hypoxylon fragiforme (Pers.) J.Kickx f. is a saprobic organism that grows on wood, most commonly beech wood. It forms semi-spherical growths that can reach up to 15 millimetres (5⁄8 in) wide. When mature, these growths are covered in 15 to 25 small bumps. The flesh of Hypoxylon fragiforme is hard and black. Young specimens are reddish in color, and they release orange pigments when mixed with potassium hydroxide (KOH).
