About Hypoprepia miniata (Kirby, 1837)
Hypoprepia miniata, commonly called the scarlet-winged lichen moth or scarlet lichen moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. William Kirby first formally described this species in 1837. Its distribution ranges from British Columbia south along the western side of the Rocky Mountains to Arizona and Texas, and it can also be found across all of eastern North America. The forewings of this moth measure between 14 and 17 mm in length. In the western portion of its range, adult moths are active from July to August, while in the eastern portion adults are active from April to September. The larvae of this species feed on lichens that grow on trees, showing a preference for lichens found on pines. Hypoprepia miniata overwinters in its larval life stage.
