About Hypomyces luteovirens (Fr.) Tul. & C.Tul.
The fruiting body of Hypomyces luteovirens forms a crusty, bumpy, mold-like structure that grows on certain mushrooms in the Russula and Lactarius genera. It begins white or yellow when young, changing to light green and finally dark green as it matures. This fungus rarely covers its host's cap, and typically only grows over the host's gills and upper stipe. It makes the host's gills appear more shallow by destroying their original structure. H. luteovirens produces tiny perithecia to release its spores. Hypomyces luteovirens is a parasitic fungus that infects Russula mushrooms, especially purple and red colored species. It may also occasionally grow on Lactarius mushrooms.
