About Hypolepis sparsisora (Schrad.) Kuhn

Hypolepis sparsisora, commonly known as the giant edgelobed fern, is an Afrotropical fern species. It has a widespread distribution across Africa and Madagascar, growing across a diverse range of elevations. In South Africa, this species is found in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Western Cape provinces. It produces a subterranean, creeping rhizome that reaches up to 9 mm in diameter. Its erect fronds are widely spaced and finely divided. The leaf blade (lamina) is ovate, measuring 1 meter by 0.8 meters, and is 4- to 5-pinnatifid. The sori are small, measuring 0.5–1 mm wide, oval-shaped, and are borne individually in the sinuses between the leaf lobes.
