About Hypocreopsis rhododendri Thaxt.

Hypocreopsis rhododendri Thaxt. is an ascomycete fungus. It is commonly called hazel gloves: its orange-brown, radiating lobular ascocarp resembles rubber gloves, and the fungus is often found growing on hazel (Corylus avellana) stems. This fungus can be found on the hyperoceanic west coasts of Britain and Ireland, in the Atlantic Pyrenees of southwestern France, and in the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States. In the Appalachian Mountains, H. rhododendri was originally discovered growing on Rhododendron maximum, and has since been found on Kalmia latifolia and Quercus species. In Europe, H. rhododendri grows in Atlantic hazel woodland, mainly on hazel stems. It has never been found growing on Rhododendron species in Europe. It occurs mainly in the damp temperate rainforests of western Scotland, and has only been recorded at four Scottish woodland sites, including Ballachuan Hazelwood and Dunollie Wood.
