About Hypocoena inquinata Guenée, 1852

Hypocoena inquinata, commonly known as the sordid wainscot or tufted sedge moth, is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae. Achille Guenée first formally described this species in 1852. It can be found across Canada, ranging from Newfoundland to British Columbia. In eastern North America, its distribution extends south to Connecticut and Ohio; in western North America, it reaches south to Colorado. This species has a wingspan between 20 and 28 mm. Adult moths are active from July to August, and there is only one generation produced each year. The larvae of Hypocoena inquinata feed on sedges.
