About Hyperolius argus Peters, 1854

Hyperolius argus exhibits sexual dichromatism. Adult males are typically green, while adult females are normally reddish-brown with large white spots. Its overall coloration and patterning vary across different geographic regions. Both male and female individuals of this species emerge from metamorphosis solid green and spotless, matching the coloration of adult males. Under experimental settings, it took roughly two months after metamorphosis for females to transition to their typical adult color pattern. For males, it took approximately three months after metamorphosis to develop vocal sacs, along with the onset of spontaneous vocalization and aggressive behavior. Females attach their eggs to underwater vegetation; this placement may be a result of rising water levels. A single female can lay a total of around 200 eggs, grouped in clusters of roughly 30 eggs each. This is a common species that inhabits low-elevation, dense, humid savannas and grasslands located near water. It breeds in shallow, vegetation-filled pans, vleis and marshes, most often in temporary bodies of water. While the species does not face any major widespread threats, it is impacted by urban expansion, increased agricultural activity, and introduced bass species.
