About Hypericum balearicum L.
Hypericum balearicum L. is a shrub or small tree that grows 0.6โ2 m (2 ft 0 in โ 6 ft 7 in) tall. It usually forms a rounded bush with erect or ascending branches. Its stems are glandular and warty; they are yellow-green when young, and turn reddish-brown as the plant ages. Its leaves are sessile, growing up to 15 mm (0.59 in) long and 7 mm (0.28 in) broad. The leaves have rounded tips, undulate margins, and broadly cuneate to rounded bases. They have a leathery texture, prominent warty glands, and are paler on their undersides. The flowers are 15โ40 mm (0.59โ1.57 in) across, with 5 golden yellow petals (rarely pale yellow), rounded sepals, and involucre-like bracts. The petals are oblong with rounded tips, 10โ20 mm (0.39โ0.79 in) long, and 4โ9 mm (0.16โ0.35 in) across. This species can be distinguished from other Hypericum species by its warty stems and leaves, and its involucre-like bracts. H. balearicum is naturally restricted to the Balearic Islands, which include Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Cabrera, and Dragonera. It is common on Mallorca, but rare on the other four islands. The species has been introduced to Italy. It grows in dry woods and calcareous rocky habitats, at elevations between 30โ1,200 m (98โ3,937 ft).
