About Hypena palparia Walker, 1861

Hypena palparia, commonly known as the variegated snout-moth or mottled bomolocha, is a moth species belonging to the family Erebidae. This species was first formally described by Francis Walker in 1861. It is distributed across North America, ranging from Nova Scotia westward through southern Canada to British Columbia, and extending south to Alabama and Texas. The wingspan of adult Hypena palparia measures 27 to 33 mm. Adults fly from June to July, with the timing varying by location. Across most of its range in eastern North America, the species produces at least two generations per year. The larvae of this moth feed on the leaves of Ostrya virginiana and species of Corylus.
