About Hyotissa hyotis (Linnaeus, 1758)

The giant honeycomb oyster, with the scientific name Hyotissa hyotis, is a very large species of saltwater oyster, which is a type of marine bivalve mollusk. Species in the family that this oyster belongs to are called honeycomb oysters or "foam oysters"; this name comes from the foam-like appearance of their shell structure when viewed under magnification. Just like the majority of bivalves, the giant honeycomb oyster is a filter feeder. This species is native to deeper waters of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. However, it has recently been discovered as an accidentally introduced species in the Florida Keys.
