About Hynobius quelpaertensis Mori, 1928
Hynobius quelpaertensis, commonly known as the Jeju salamander (also spelled Cheju salamander), is a species of salamander. It occurs on multiple islands and peninsulas off the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula, including Jindo, Geojedo, Jejudo, and Namhae. Its habitat is moist mountain forests. This salamander has a speckled brown coloration. Adult males measure between 8 and 14 cm (3โ6 inches) long, while adult females range from 7 to 11 cm (3โ4 inches) long. Males can also be distinguished by their thick front legs and black coloration on their backs. This species mates between March and late April, and lays its eggs under small rocks and leaves in mountain pools. The Jeju salamander was previously classified as a subspecies of the Korean salamander, under the scientific name Hynobius leechii quelpaertensis.
