About Hymenoxys grandiflora (Torr. & A.Gray) K.F.Parker
Hymenoxys grandiflora is a perennial herb that grows up to 30 centimeters (1 foot) in height. Its leaves measure 7.5–10 cm (3–4 inches) in length. The plant typically produces one flower head per stem, with a maximum of 10 flower heads per individual plant, and flowers are visible between June and August. Each flower head contains 15–44 ray flowers and 150–400 disc flowers. Its seeds are five-sided, with narrow scales at the tip. This species bears the largest flowers of any member of its genus, which is the source of its specific epithet grandiflora, meaning large-flowered. Hymenoxys grandiflora is native to high elevation areas of the Rocky Mountains in the western United States, occurring in the states of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. It grows in rocky slopes, meadows, and tundra habitats.
