About Hymenophyllum multifidum (G.Forst.) Sw.
This fern species is characterized by heavily divided pinnae, which gives it an appearance of being split into many small sections. It frequently grows in colonies consisting of many individual plants. A key identifying feature that sets it apart from other ferns, alongside other traits, is its prominent sori, which are bent at right angles to the fronds. The species grows across all major islands of New Zealand, as well as New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands. It can also be found on Lord Howe Island, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa. In its habitat, it most often grows on the forest floor, but it can also grow as an epiphyte on rock faces. Some taxonomic authorities do not consider this species to be endemic to New Zealand.
