This mushroom species, Hymenopellis furfuracea, has a brownish cap that is darker toward its center, measuring between 2.5 and 11 centimeters (1 to 4 and 1/4 inches) across. Its stem ranges from 7 to 20 centimeters (3 to 8 inches) in length. The mushroom’s flesh is whitish, and it produces a white spore print. It is widely distributed across North America east of the Rocky Mountains. It grows on dead wood from hardwood trees, occurring either alone or in groups, and can sometimes be found on heavily decayed logs and stumps.
