About Hylorina sylvatica Bell, 1843
Male Hylorina sylvatica reach a snout-vent length of 53โ56 mm (2.1โ2.2 inches), while females grow to 60โ66 mm (2.4โ2.6 inches). Their body color is emerald-green during the day, and changes to dark green at night. Adult Hylorina sylvatica live in permanent pools, temporary pools, swamps, and marshes. This species needs wetlands surrounded by vegetation to breed. Females lay eggs in pools. The larvae are aquatic and live in pools and ponds. Because this species spends an extended period of time in the tadpole stage, including overwintering, it needs bodies of water that persist year-round. Tadpoles are light brown on their upper surface and darker brown on their underside. They have a circular mark around each nostril and a rhomboid-shaped mark between their eyes.
