About Hydrornis irena (Temminck, 1836)
This colourful bird, Hydrornis irena, commonly known as the Malayan banded pitta, has distinct marked plumage. It has a black head with a yellow to orange streak running above the eye, an orange-red nape, a lemon-yellow throat, and a chest with alternating bars of orange and dark blue. On the chest, barring shows more orange toward the sides and more blue toward the centre, and the belly is blue. Its back is brown and its tail is blue. The Malayan banded pitta is native to tropical southeastern Asia, with a natural range covering Malaysia, Thailand, and Sumatra. It most commonly lives in primary lowland evergreen forests, including swamp forests, and can be found at altitudes up to 1,500 m (5,000 ft). It also lives in secondary forest, though it may not be able to maintain stable populations well in this habitat. Its diet consists mainly of insects and fruits.
