The genus Hydrophilus includes some of the largest aquatic insects in the world. Adults of Hydrophilus ensifer typically grow to a total length between 30 and 37 millimeters, though many adult individuals are less than 32 millimeters long. This species is distributed from Argentina northward across most of South America, extends north through Central America into central Mexico, and is found throughout the Caribbean. Its northernmost range reaches South Florida in the United States.
