Its common names come from its creeping growth habit and distinctive unusual leaves. This species grows in marshy, boggy, and other wet environments. It is used in aquariums, where it is easy to care for. It prefers a high-quality substrate and at least moderate lighting, and benefits from added carbon dioxide in aquarium settings. It is widely used as a foreground aquarium plant.
