This species was previously known under the scientific name Dichroa febrifuga, and it counts as an important herb in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is classified as one of the 50 fundamental herbs of the practice. The alkaloids febrifugine and isofebrifugine are thought to produce its observed antimalarial effects. When prepared as a traditional herbal treatment, it is used combined with other plants including Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice), Ziziphus jujuba, and Zingiber officinale (ginger).
