The fungal species Hydnellum spongiosipes (Peck) Pouzar has a cap that can grow up to 8 centimetres (3+1⁄4 inches) wide. Its flesh is light brown on the outer portion and darker brown toward the center. It produces a brown spore print. This species is distributed in Europe and North America. In North America, it appears in the eastern part of the continent between July and September.
