About Huia masonii (Boulenger, 1884)
The Javan torrent frog, scientifically named Huia masonii (Boulenger, 1884) (also referenced as Wijayarana masonii), is a species of frog belonging to the family Ranidae. This species is endemic to the island of Java in Indonesia. Within Java, it can be found in Mount Halimun Salak National Park, Ujung Kulon National Park, and Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park in West Java, and also in the Dieng Nature Reserve in Central Java. Its natural habitats are clear, fast-flowing streams and torrents, located both in forests and somewhat more open landscapes. It is a common species in its specific preferred habitat, which is currently threatened by stream sedimentation and agro-chemical pollution. Male Javan torrent frogs use high-frequency communication to overcome the low-frequency-dominated noise of their riverine habitats. The second harmonic of the males' calls is ultrasonic, and their warbles are highly diverse, which may function as individual vocal signatures.
