This frog species, previously referred to as H. chinensis (currently classified as Hoplobatrachus rugulosus (Wiegmann, 1834)), is large and robust. It can reach a snout-vent length of 12 centimetres (4+1⁄2 inches) or more, with females growing larger than males. The species is primarily insectivorous.
