About Homophyllia bowerbanki (Milne Edwards & Haime, 1857)
Homophyllia bowerbanki is most often a small encrusting coral, but it can occasionally grow to over 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in diameter. Its corallites are cerioid with irregular shapes, and an obvious central corallite is usually present. This coral is typically mottled in colour, most commonly reddish-brown, brown, or grey. Irregularly shaped corallites may be arranged individually, or grouped into short valleys with continuous walls that hold multiple corallites. The polyps of Homophyllia bowerbanki remain fleshy even when retracted. This species occurs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, ranging from Australia to Japan and Kiribati.
