About Holocentrus adscensionis (Osbeck, 1765)
Holocentrus adscensionis (Osbeck, 1765) is a squirrelfish belonging to the family Holocentridae that lives in the Atlantic Ocean. In the Western Atlantic, its range stretches from North Carolina, USA to Brazil, and covers the entire Caribbean Sea. In the Eastern Atlantic, its range extends from Gabon to Ascension Island. Unusual sightings of this species have been recorded: one was reported in 2016 in the central Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Malta, and another in 2023 in the Mediterranean Sea near Northern Cyprus. Most individuals of this species live between 8 and 30 metres (26 and 98 ft) below the water surface. However, the species can also be found at the surface, or at depths as great as 180 metres (590 ft). This fish can grow to a maximum total length of 61 centimetres (24 in). Most mature individuals reach a total length of around 25.0 centimetres (9.8 in).
