About Hipparchia fidia Linnaeus, 1767

This species, originally described as S. fidia L. by Linnaeus and included in Seitz's work, is illustrated at plate 44d. On the upper side of the wings, it is similar to the preceding species, Hipparchia fatua. However, the underside of its wings is much more variegated and brighter in color. The forewing ocelli are large, with a broad yellow border; white smears are located in front of these ocelli, and these smears have a proximal black border. On the underside of the hindwing, the outer black discal line projects outward as a broad tooth behind the apex of the cell; this line has a broad white outer edge, and beyond it, distinct white smears extend toward the distal margin. The wingspan of Hipparchia fidia ranges from 48 to 56 millimetres (1.9 to 2.2 inches).
