About Himantoglossum robertianum (Loisel.) P.Delforge
Himantoglossum robertianum is a bulbous plant that flowers between January and April. Its bulb is edible after cooking. This species is native to the Mediterranean Basin, where it occurs in Portugal, Morocco, Spain, the Balearic Islands, France, Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Algeria, Libya, Croatia, Montenegro, mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, Crete, Anatolia, and Cyprus. It was newly recorded in Palestine in March 2023, and was first found growing in Britain in 2022. It grows in short, nutrient-poor grassland, garrigue, scrub, and open woodland. It favors dry to moist, alkaline and calcareous substrates, and can be found at altitudes up to 1,700 m (5,600 ft). Researchers believe its distribution range is expanding due to the effects of climate change.
