About Hibiscus poeppigii (Spreng.) Garcke

Hibiscus poeppigii is a subshrub, a partly woody plant, that can grow up to 1.8 meters (5.9 ft) in height. Its leaves are typically broadly egg-shaped, usually with three lobes, and measure 1.2 to 4.5 centimeters long by 1.2 to 4.3 centimeters wide. The flowers hang downwards, have a narrow funnel shape with distinct separate petals, and measure 0.7 to 1.2 centimeters long, with a width half that measurement. Petals are most commonly red, but may occasionally be pink. A bright red stamen column extends out from the flower, and it carries dark orange pollen. Hibiscus poeppigii is native to the Americas, where it occurs in Monroe and Miami-Dade counties in Florida, Mexico, Guatemala, and the West Indies. This species prefers morning sun with some shade during hot afternoons, and can also grow in full sun or partial shade. Its individual blooms only remain open for one day. While it has some cold resistance, it cannot tolerate temperatures below 40°F (4.4°C).
