About Hibiscus meraukensis Hochr.
Hibiscus meraukensis Hochr. is an annual flowering shrub belonging to the cotton plant family Malvaceae. It is native to large areas of northern Australia, ranging from Western Australia to Queensland, and also grows in Merauke, South Papua, Indonesia — the location where its type specimen was collected. This plant completes its annual growth cycle: it typically sprouts after the wet season in northern Australia, dies back during the dry season, and re-grows from seed the following year. Compared to other species in the Hibiscus genus, it is relatively small, and rarely reaches 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) in height. Hibiscus meraukensis occurs in the Australian states and territory of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland, as well as the Merauke region of South Papua (Indonesia) and neighboring Papua New Guinea. It can grow in a wide variety of habitats, including coastal vine thickets, riparian areas, Melaleuca forests, savannahs, and shrublands.
