About Hibiscus kokio Hillebr. ex Wawra

Scientific name: Hibiscus kokio Hillebr. ex Wawra

Seven species of hibiscus native to Hawaii are collectively referred to as Hawaiian hibiscus. The yellow hibiscus is the official state flower of Hawaii. In the Hawaiian Islands, the most commonly grown ornamental hibiscus plants are the non-native Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) and its many hybrids, while the native Hibiscus arnottianus is planted occasionally.

It is thought that native Hibiscus plants in Hawaii originated from four separate colonization events for the five endemic species (four closely related species plus the yellow-flowered species), with one additional colonization event for each of the two indigenous species.
