Hibiscadelphus giffardianus Rock is a small tree that reaches 7 meters (23 feet) in height, with a trunk diameter of 30 centimeters (12 inches). This species grows in mixed mesic forests on the slopes of Mauna Loa, at elevations between 1,200 and 1,310 meters (3,940 to 4,300 feet). Plants that commonly grow alongside it include ʻōhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha), koa (Acacia koa), mānele (Sapindus saponaria), hoio (Diplazium sandwicianum), pilo (Coprosma spp.), māmaki (Pipturus albidus), kōpiko (Psychotria spp.), olopua (Nestegis sandwicensis), alani (Melicope spp.), ʻaʻaliʻi (Dodonaea viscosa), and naio (Myoporum sandwicense).
