About Hexastylis shuttleworthii (Britten & Baker) Small

This species is currently classified as Hexastylis shuttleworthii (Britten & Baker) Small, and is also referred to as Asarum shuttleworthii. It is an evergreen herbaceous plant native to the southeastern United States. Its leaves are heart-shaped, with variegation along the leaf veins; only rare northern populations of this species lack this variegation. It spreads through thick, branching rhizomes that grow beneath the forest floor. The flowers are solitary and emerge directly from the rhizomes. These flowers are dark purple to brown in color, typically trilobed, and are notably larger than the flowers of most closely related species. This species blooms in early spring.
