About Heuchera villosa Michx.

Heuchera villosa, commonly known as hairy alumroot, is a small evergreen perennial plant native to the Eastern United States. It grows exclusively on rock outcrops, including cliffs and boulders. It is classified as locally endangered in the state of Ohio. This species is sometimes grown as an ornamental plant, and some of its cultivars have reddish leaf coloration. Two varieties of Heuchera villosa have been formally described, and these varieties are sometimes treated as separate distinct species. Heuchera villosa var. macrorhiza grows on calcareous substrates, and is found primarily west of the Appalachian Mountains. Heuchera villosa var. villosa grows on acidic substrates, and is found primarily in the Appalachian Mountains and areas east of the range.
