About Heteroscarus acroptilus (Richardson, 1846)

Heteroscarus acroptilus, commonly known as the rainbow cale, is a species of weed whiting. It is endemic to Australia, found in marine waters along the country’s southern coast. This fish inhabits rocky reefs with abundant brown algae growth, as well as seagrass beds, particularly those of the genus Posidonia. It lives at depths between 1 metre (3.3 ft) and 15 metres (49.2 ft). The species reaches a maximum standard length of 24 centimetres (9.4 in). It is available in the aquarium trade. Heteroscarus acroptilus is the only confirmed known member of the genus Heteroscarus.
