About Heteropriacanthus cruentatus (Lacepède, 1801)
Heteropriacanthus, commonly known as glasseyes or glass bigeyes, is a genus in the bigeye family that occurs in all tropical seas worldwide. Members of this genus occasionally enter the aquarium trade, and the group can reach a maximum total length of 50.7 cm (20.0 in). Previously, the entire Heteropriacanthus genus was classified into just one species: Heteropriacanthus cruentatus. However, recent morphological and genetic analyses suggest the genus should instead be split into three separate species. These are Heteropriacanthus cruentatus, found in the Atlantic Ocean and southwest Indian Ocean; H. fulgens, found in the northeastern Atlantic; and H. carolinus, found in the Indo-Pacific. H. cruentatus can be distinguished from the other two species in its genus by the distinct coloration of its caudal and anal fins.
