About Hesperiphona abeillei (Lesson, 1839)
The hooded grosbeak, whose scientific name is Hesperiphona abeillei, is a passerine bird belonging to the finch family. It lives in the highlands of Central America, mainly in Mexico and Guatemala. It is a medium-large grosbeak with a large bill. Males have a black head and bright yellow upper parts, while females are less brightly colored and have a smaller black cap. French naturalist René Lesson first briefly described this species in 1839 under the binomial name Guiraca abaillei. Today, the International Ornithologists' Union places the hooded grosbeak and its close relative the evening grosbeak in the genus Hesperiphona. This genus was first introduced by French ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1850. Some other taxonomic authorities group these two grosbeak species along with the hawfinch in the genus Coccothraustes instead.
