About Hesperia uncas Edwards, 1863

Hesperia uncas, commonly known as the Uncas skipper or white-vein skipper, is a butterfly species that belongs to the family Hesperiidae. Its range extends from the midwestern United States to the southern parts of the three Canadian Prairie provinces, reaching as far north as Edmonton, Alberta. The wingspan of this species measures 32 to 42 mm. This species has two generations per year. Adult butterflies are on wing from May to June and again from August to September across most of its range; in Canada, adults fly from mid-June to late July. It inhabits sandy areas, open woodlands, and sagebrush habitats. The larvae of Hesperia uncas feed on Deschampsia elongata, Stipa, Bromus rubens, and Poa pratensis. Adult butterflies feed on flower nectar from a variety of different flowers, including rabbitbrush, Stipa nevadensis (needlegrass), and Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama).
